Benefits of Buying Organic Cotton Clothing

I put together the following for an article submission and thought there were a few eyebrow raising facts in there...

Organic cotton crop

The raw material of an average T-shirt, cotton, is considered the world's dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of insecticides and fertilisers. Cotton covers 2.5% of the world's cultivated land yet uses 16% of the world's insecticides, more than any other single major crop.

Up to 99% of the world's cotton farmers live and work in developing countries, two thirds coming from India and China. Between them they are responsible for handling US$ 2 billion of agrochemicals every year; US$ 819 million of which are toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organisation (1). Three of the ten most commonly used chemical insecticides in cotton production have been classified as acutely hazardous - all but one of the remaining seven are classified as moderately to highly hazardous (2). These insecticides are commonly used in developing countries without any of the safeguards, regulations or
protection expected in the West.

This farmer's loading up with a fiery solution of chilli and garlic to spray his organic cotton crop - a natural pesticide

This guy might not be sporting a mask but he could do with one - spraying his cotton with synthetic fertilisers

Nitrogen synthetic fertilisers are considered the most detrimental to the environment, causing leaching and run-off to fresh water habitats, drinking wells and the oceans (3). These fertilisers are a major contributor to increased N2O emissions, which are 300 times more potent than CO2 as greenhouse gas (4), which is ominous for global warming as synthetic fertilizer use is forecast to increase roughly 2.5 times by mid-century (4).

Insecticide use has decreased in the last 10 years with the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops, the fastest adapted yet most controversial new technology in the history of agriculture. As of 2008, GM cotton already commands 34% of total cotton cropland and 45% of world cotton production. However, Monsanto, a leading company in the field of biotechnology who have been promoting the benefits of genetically modified crops for some time, have revealed that a common insect pest, the pink boll worm, has developed resistance to its flagship genetically modified product in India. These findings have given critics of bio-technology evidence to back up claims that 'super bugs' will develop, hyper resistant to man-modified crops and more destructive than their predecessors.

Benefits of Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. It is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organisations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production.

Organic cotton farmers have reported significant improvement to their lives. As well as now working in a far less hazardous environment their profit margins are, for the most part, larger allowing them to educate their children and pay for better health services.

So it is clear that buying organic cotton T-shirts not only benefits yourself, it also benefits the planet and helps the farmer who grows the raw ingredient in the field.

Lady-Fit Full Zip Fleece Completes The Collection

The following article appeared in a recent edition of Printwear and Promotion Magazine:

'Fruit of the Loom can offer a complete collection of Outdoor Fleece products for men, women and children, following the launch of the new Lady-Fit Fleece. The launch is part of the Company’s programme to introduce great value coordinating designs across all over styles.

Practical and fashionable, the new Lady-Fit Full Zip Fleece is made from the same durable 100% polyester pill-resistant fleece fabric (300 gm/m2) as the Men’s Full Zip Fleece and the Children’s Outdoor Fleece.  Signature features that appear across the styles include raglan sleeves, subtle hem and seam detailing, twin side pockets and self-coloured zips.
A shorter body, which has a bottom hem that sits closer to the hips than the thighs, shaped side seams for a gently waisted, feminine silhouette, and covered zips for ease of embellishment are distinguishing features of the new Lady-Fit version.  The men’s jacket features an elasticated draw cord with stopper at the hem.
The Lady-Fit Full Zip Fleece is available in five core colours that are also available in the Men’s and Children’s styles – black, bottle green, deep navy, red and royal blue.  The Men’s style also comes in smoke, bright orange and bright yellow.  Sizes for the Men’s and Women’s styles range from S – XXL, the Children’s Outdoor Fleece is available in sizes 3-4 to 14-15 years.

Fruit of the Loom also offers two other fleece styles for Men – the classic Half Zip Fleece and the Sleeveless Fleece.  Both styles co-ordinate with the Full Zip Fleece jackets, offering the same pill-resistant fleece fabric, cover stitching detail and self coloured zips.

The colour palette for the Half Zip Fleece includes the five core colours, plus smoke. The Sleeveless Fleece is offered in black, bottle green, deep navy and red plus bright orange and bright yellow: “The availability of the bright colours in the sleeveless style reflects the garment’s particular popularity amongst workwear customers” Joanna Lewis from Fruit of the Loom comments. She adds :”Fleece jackets remain the number one outerwear choice for promotional customers, offering a compelling combination of warmth, breathability, ease of decoration and affordability. The new Lady-Fit style is an important addition to our product range as it gives our customers the opportunity to supply coordinating fleece outerwear for men, women and children – an increasingly important consideration in today’s marketplace”. '

Fruit of the Loom's New Styles From 2011

      Brand Logo file fotl_logo.jpg
Fruit of the Loom have been strengthening their market leading activewear collection with five new garment designs in 2011. T-shirts led the way – three new Valueweight T styles marked the further expansion of this famous range. The Heavy Polo has also been re-invented, and the first ever women’s Outdoor Fleece has been launched.

More than a T-shirt, the Fruit of the Loom Valueweight T is a range that keeps growing. New in 2011 were the Fruit of the Loom Lady-Fit Valueweight V-Neck T, Lady-Fit Valueweight Long Sleeve T and the Tank Top. They are produced in-house at their manufacturing plant in Morocco, using fine knit gauge 100% cotton Valueweight fabric (160/165 gm/m2). This is made from Belcoro® yarn for a softer hand and great results for T-shirt printing.  All of the new Valueweight T styles feature cotton/Lycra® rib necks for extra comfort and superior shape retention.
The Lady-Fit Valueweight V-Neck T offers a direct female equivalent to the men’s Valueweight V-Neck T, and follows on from the success of the crew neck Lady-Fit Valueweight T. It is available in sizes XS-XL and six colours – White, Sunflower, Black, Red, Pink and Deep Navy.
The Lady-Fit Valueweight Long Sleeve T features a scooped neck, shaped side seams and a taped neckline, and complements both the men’s and children’s Long Sleeve Valueweight Ts. It is available in sizes XS-XL and comes in a choice of Black or White colours.
The Tank Top is a great all-rounder that’s perfect for sports casualwear and club uniforms, plus music merchandising. It features a contemporary sleeveless silhouette, classic crew neck and deep armholes finished with 1×1 rib cotton/Lycra®. It comes in sizes S-XXL and five colours – White, Black, Red, Heather Grey and Deep Navy.
The new Heavy Polo has been restyled to offer a more premium finish. It takes its design cues from retail trends and is ideal for leisurewear, sportswear and corporate events. Made in 100% cotton (230/240 gm/m2), it features a stand-up collar, self-fabric placket with three self-colour buttons, 1×1 rib sleeve cuffs, and a back yoke. It is available in sizes S-XXL and five colours – White, Black, Charcoal, Deep Navy and Brick Red.
The Lady-Fit Full Zip Fleece is perfect for workwear and outdoor leisure activities. It translates the contemporary styling of the men’s Outdoor Full Zip Fleece to a complementary women’s outerwear design. The Lady-Fit model is made from the same 100% polyester pill-resistant fleece fabric (300 gm/m2) as the men’s style, and shares the signature hem and raglan seam detailing, and two side pockets. However, its front and pocket zips are covered, and it adds a shorter body length and shaped side seams for a feminine silhouette. It is available in sizes S-XXL and five colours – Black, Bottle Green, Red, Royal Blue and Deep Navy.

Hanes T-Shirts And Other Garments

The Hanes brand was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has grown to be one of the largest apparel brands in the World.
Since John Wesley Hanes designed  the first Hanes T-shirt in 1901, Hanes has evolved from a basic line of men’s underwear to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing: from socks to underwear, leisurewear, sportswear and organic T-shirt and polo shirt ranges.
In 1975 the classic heavy-weight T-shirt, the Hanes Beefy-T®, was introduced specifically for the T-shirt printing industry and in 1982 the company expanded into the European market. 2010 saw the launch of Hanes Tagless and Hanes organic T-shirt ranges.

Hanes Beefy T - a quality garment
Hanes have a good reputation for high standards of production and implement a number of quality control measures including in-line and final inspections. The company mission states that Hanes “Actively seeks opportunities to contribute to the communities in which we do business and to improve the environment that sustains us all…we are committed to the fair treatment and compensation of employees….and strive to continuously improve our environmental performance through conservation, waste minimisation, water and energy efficiency and effective use of raw material”.
Since 1982 independent European Hanes collections have expanded the range of quality printable fabrics - using a Hanes ring spun T-shirt for printing will achieve great results - and  Hanes was one of the first brands to introduce individual collections for men and women. The first successful products included slim fitting T-shirts for men and the BeauTy TM and Spicy TM collections for women. New, fresh colours and cuts were subsequently added.
Stedman was launched in 2001 as a basic collection of T-shirts, polos and sweats and now Oeko-Tex certified  Nano in 100% rung spun cotton is the latest brand offering one T-shirt in 2 colours and five sizes at low prices.
Hanes now offers a collection of tees, organic tees, sportswear, polos, sweats, pullovers, underwear, socks and kids’ wear. Since 2010 the organic cotton range defines another chapter for the future of Hanes and there are many new organic products for 2011. Women and men will find two new T-shirts. One with a crew neck, one with a V-neck, both made of 150 g/m2 quality in the sizes of S-2XL (women) or S-3XL (men). For children there is a 150 g/m2 crew neck T-shirt in sizes XS-XL (5-13 years).
Polo shirts come in one weight (180 g/m2) of combed ring spun cotton pique for men, women and children. All three models have cuffs, side slits and same-colour buttons. A grey contrast-coloured neck band completes the look. The new collection also includes 280 g/m2 hooded sweats for men, women and children and can be washed at up to 60 degrees. They also have a grey contrast-coloured neck band, waistband and cuffs made of ribbed fabric and zippers the same colour as the jacket. The children’s version has no tie-string in the hood for safety reasons.
Hanes also offers a dedicated sports collection – Tagless sports have been available with five styles made of breathable polyester and this year seven more styles have been added.
All Hanes garments meet the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, the globally uniform testing and certification system for textiles.
